Juncker’s
State of the Union speech
Yesterday, Commission President Juncker delivered his State
of the Union speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Among other
things, Juncker called for the creation of a true European Foreign Minister
post for Federica Mogherini, which would give the current EU High
Representative a stronger representation in foreign affairs. In his speech
Juncker also stressed the need to strengthen European defence capabilities by
creating closer military cooperation between Member States. Moreover, while
recognising that the EU is currently facing an “existential crisis”, the
Commission President stated that the EU must and will overcome fragmentation. More
